Every day, South African teenagers make choices that shape their futures – whether to stay in school, how to navigate relationships, sex, substances and violence. Underneath many of those choices sits one question: “Who am I and what is possible for me?”
That question was at the heart of DGMT’s latest Perspectives Series conversation, streamed live on LinkedIn. The webinar unpacked why teen identity – shaped by family, community, culture and the stories young people hear about themselves – is so often overlooked in how South Africa supports adolescents, and what investing in it could look like in practice.
Thando Nkosi and Shirley Eadie from Hold My Hand were joined by Paula Yarrow (Waves for Change), Luke van der Spuy (The Culture Foundry Co.) and Patricia Watson (former chief director of social inclusion and partnerships at the Department of Basic Education).
The discussion covered youth programmes, creative practice and government.
