Reflective thinking is important for democracies and society in general, but even more so in seriously polarised societies such as South Africa – where communities are still divided and where violence is common in dealing with social conflict. The ability to think reflectively and critically is a skill that can be cultivated through education and in this learning brief we illustrate that this process can start as early as preschool. This brief describes our Early Thinking Project which involved piloting the use of a Philosophy for Children (P4C) approach with children aged 3-5 years.
