Liezel Engelbrecht, Nutrition Lead for the Hold My Hand Accelerator incubated by DGMT, recently spoke to SAFM about the critical role municipalities play in South Africa’s mission to end child stunting by 2030. With Local Government Elections approaching, she argued that stunting — caused by chronic malnutrition and worsened by poor living conditions — cannot be solved by clinics alone. The first 1 000 days of a child’s life are shaped by the environments municipalities manage every day: access to clean water, sanitation, waste removal and nutritious food. Getting local government to act on these basics, she said, is one of the most powerful levers we have for giving South Africa’s children a fighting chance.
